Dimitri G. CAPAITZIS * completed his secondary education at Greek and English schools in Egypt, and attended Imperial College of Science & Technology, University of London, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree with Honours in Engineering in 1955 and qualified as an Associate of the City & Guilds Institute.In 1956/7, he gained practical experience in England at North-Eastern Marine, Hawthorn Leslie, Furness Shipbuilding and at sea with Suisse-Atlantique.
He began his professional career in 1957 as a superintendent engineer with Rethymnis & Kulukundis, London. Initially he resided in Japan where he handled newbuildings and repairs. Later he was based in London, from where he travelled widely attending newbuildings and repairs. In this period the company ran 45 ships and had a newbuilding program for 18 ships.
In 1965, Mr Capaitzis became senior superintendent engineer of C.M. Lemos , at their office in London and attended newbuildings and repairs worldwide. The company operated 50 tankers, bulkers, obo's and cargo ships and had a newbuilding program for 15 ships.
In 1966, he joined M. Marcou, London, and as manager supervised operations, technical, supply, personnel and insurance departments and attended inspections, deliveries, repairs, claims etc.
In 1973, Helix Marine Consultants, London, was established and Mr Capaitzis was one of the Directors. The firm advised various clients on about 20 newbuildings and conversions in Japan, England, Denmark, Poland, Holland and undertook inspections, deliveries, repairs and claims.
He established his own firm in 1976, opening offices in London and Piraeus. Since then, the company has acted as technical consultants to various clients in the contracting, specifications, planning and supevision of about 130 newbuildings and 7 conversions in Japan, Korea, China, Brazil, Romania, Spain and Greece, in inspections and deliveries, repairs and insurance claims, in arbitrations and legal cases and in assessments for bank loans. The firm also has served as technical and management consultants to J.G. Goumas, Piraeus, in the building and operation of 8 IHI Freedom cargo ships.
Mr Capaitzis, a Chartered Engineer, is a member of the Associations of Hellenic Consultants, of British Consultants, the Hellenic Institute of Marine Technology, the UK Institute of Mechanical Engineers the US Society of Naval Architects & Marine Engineers, a Fellow of the UK Institute of Marine Engineers and the Royal Institution of Naval Architects and has also been a member of the Greek Technical Committee/ American Bureau of Shipping.
He speaks Greek, English, French, Arabic and Italian.
